CALL FOR PAPERS
AMCIS 2025 August 14-16, 2025
Montreal, Canada

Minitrack: Artificial Intelligence for Sustainability
Track: Green IS and Sustainability (SIG Green)

DESCRIPTION
The catastrophic impact of climate change has propelled environmental sustainability to the forefront of academic inquiry. The sustainability challenge is multi-dimensional, involving complex interactions and necessitating trade-offs among conflicting values of various stakeholders. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers innovative solutions for mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change and adapting to evolving planetary conditions. These solutions range from earlier and more accurate detection of climate risks to advanced predictive capabilities that support decision-making, as well as immersive applications that help individuals reconnect with the natural environment.

This minitrack adopts a socio-technical-ecological perspective to explore how AI, including generative AI and intelligent agents, can be harnessed to promote environmental sustainability and address the challenges posed by climate change. We invite research of all types, from conceptual work that develops theories around AI to empirical investigations of the interplay between AI and sustainability-related phenomena and design work that creates novel solutions and approaches.

TOPICS OF INTEREST
Research topics include, but are not limited to:

* Use of AI, including generative AI (GAI), for sustainability to transform high-polluting industries.
* Implications of Industry 4.0 and the rise of AI agents on environmental sustainability.
* Applications of AI for sustainability across various sectors, including energy, transportation, agriculture, wildlife, information technology, smart cities, industrial production, waste management, and consumer goods.
* Design and utilization of AI to improve organizations' environmental footprints.
* Theoretical frameworks integrating AI with sustainability payoffs.
* Factors affecting the success and failure of AI applications in sustainability.
* AI tools for measuring dimensions of environmental sustainability, including environment-related Sustainable Development Goals.
* Development of sustainable products and services utilizing AI and GAI.
* Use of AI to encourage environmentally responsible behaviors among individuals.
* Application of responsible innovation processes in designing and developing AI applications.
* Conceptual models relating to the relationships between AI applications and environmental sustainability.
* Governance and public policy considerations regarding AI with sustainability implications.
* Threats and risks associated with using AI for sustainability, including algorithmic bias, explainability, transparency, and the digital divide.
* Ethical and social issues linked to the use of AI for environmental sustainability.
* Sustainable design and the use of human-centered AI for enhancing environmental sustainability.
