MINI-TRACK: Social Computing and Well-being
TRACK: Social Computing
DESCRIPTION
Social connection is a fundamental human need, yet in our increasingly digital world, feelings of isolation and loneliness are rising. Social computing offers a unique yet complex opportunity to address this challenge and promote well-being. On the one hand, as technology continues to evolve rapidly, we can expect to see more innovative and groundbreaking ways to use social computing to connect people and address the challenges we face. On the other hand, social computing can exacerbate and complicate well-being issues by exposing people to online toxicity, misinformation, or echo chambers. Thus, IS researchers must explore the nuances of how social computing can be unlocked for the greater good while minimizing any potential harm to well-being. This mini-track invites innovative research that frames the impact of social computing on well-being by showing how people can build stronger social connections, manage negative impacts, and create positive online experiences.
Empirical, theoretical, or position papers are all encouraged within this mini-track. The topics of interest include using social computing for well-being. Some examples include:
Designing Supportive Online Communities:
- The impact of social computing platforms on belonging, social support, and social identity
- Characteristics of communities to drive meaningful interactions and reduce social isolation
- Community design to promote self-compassion, mindfulness, and coping techniques
- Mechanisms and tools to identify and filter misinformation and misleading content, especially in an era of generative toolsets
- The role of online communities in supporting resilience and recovery in individuals with physical or mental health challenges
Optimizing Mental Health and Well-being:
- Social platform use for early detection and intervention of mental health concerns
- Interventions to promote healthy online behavior and reduce negative social media impacts
- Leveraging social computing to connect individuals with mental health resources and support
- Educating users to recognize and minimize the impact of toxic behaviors on their well-being
- Fostering user agency to give users greater control over their online experiences
Personalized Well-being Experiences:
- Tailoring social platforms to promote well-being based on individual needs and preferences
- Optimizing platform content to drive more positive community cultures
- Personalizing content for healthy social comparison and reduced feelings of inadequacy
- Understanding the risks of algorithmically driven, personalized content that may drive individuals towards extremist views or damaging experiences
- Examining how algorithm literacy can promote healthy and intentional social platform use
We are particularly interested in research that:
- Employs evidence-based approaches from psychology and well-being research.
- Develops and evaluates user-centered interventions with measurable positive outcomes.
- Prioritizes ethical considerations around data privacy, safety, and user agency.
- Considers the potential negative impacts of social media and proposes mitigation strategies.
