Dear AIS Colleagues,
In recent days, there were a couple of posts on AIS World querying the AIS
policy on assigning DOIs for conferences. In my role as the current AIS AVP
for Indexing and Publication, I would just like to clarify our approach at
AIS.
In general, the approach at AIS has been to assign DOIs to journal papers
but not to conference papers. This is because in the IS field, conference
proceedings are generally not considered the final destination of an
academic paper. Rather, conference papers are typically intermediate steps
towards journal publication, as shown here
https://aisnet.org/news/550523/The-Benefits-of-Submitting-Conference-Papers.htm.
For the same reason, AIS does not require copyright from authors on
conference proceeding papers.
AIS has affiliations with a range of other conferences and journals. Their
policies can sometimes differ from those at AIS. Our approach applies
specifically to AIS conferences and journals.
DOIs and other indexing topics are important to many AIS members. For this
reason, let me add that AIS is also working on other related indexing
initiatives:
- ISSN, which is needed for SCOPUS indexing of serial proceedings
- Web of Science indexing for some proceedings
- SCOPUS indexing for proceeding submission
We are continuing to work on these initiatives.
Best regards,
Juliana
