CALL FOR PAPERS
Dear AIS-Community,
We are pleased to invite you to submit your contributions to our minitrack titled "Gameful IS for Sustainable Development", which will be part of the AMCIS 2025 conference in Montreal (Canada), August 13-17, 2025.
This minitrack invites submissions that explore how games, gamification, and gameful design can support the transition to a sustainable society.
We seek contributions that deepen our understanding of the potential of gameful approaches to foster positive psychological and behavioral change and promote sustainable practices among individuals, communities, institutions, and businesses.
We welcome research on the design, use, and perception of game-based solutions, innovative technological approaches from new developments in game design, and their (prospective) impact on sustainability. In addition, we encourage theoretical, conceptual, and methodological contributions that advance our knowledge of gameful design in the interplay of different dimensions of sustainability, such as the ethics of motivational and persuasive design for environmental progress. We are open to different methodological approaches and interdisciplinary submissions from fields such as IS, HCI, psychology, sociology, and management, and encourage diverse perspectives on the critical issues related to realizing sustainable development with gameful IS.
Potential topics for submissions include, but are not limited to:
• Design and implementation of game-based solutions for promoting sustainable behavior
• Gamification strategies and their effectiveness in encouraging sustainable practices at the micro-, macro- and meso-level
• Case studies of gameful IS interventions in communities, institutions, or organizations to support one or multiple sustainable development goals
• Innovative uses of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), extended reality (XR) and other immersive technologies for raising awareness and promoting action toward sustainability
• Studies of gameful approaches for environmental education and awareness
• Ethical considerations in the use of motivational and persuasive game design for sustainability, including potential risks and unintended consequences
• Theoretical frameworks and models for understanding the role of gameful design in fostering sustainable behavior
• New methodologies for assessing the impact of gameful interventions on individual and collective action towards sustainability
Contributions that explore novel or combine several methodologies and theoretical approaches, challenge existing paradigms, or propose innovative IS solutions are particularly welcome.
